The departure of “white shirts” from Albania does not stop, 800 doctors left in 5 years

The departures of white shirts in Albania do not stop.

Data provided to Tv Klan by the Medical Order shows that the departure trend in 2024 was the same as previous years.

Specifically, during the past year, 146 doctors have requested a certificate of good conduct, which serves them for employment abroad.

In the last 5 years, the number of doctors who have left has reached nearly 800. The largest number of white-collar workers who have requested a certificate of good conduct was in 2022, with 191 such cases.

The phenomenon of the departure of white shirts has created numerous gaps in the health system, not only in district health centers and Regional hospitals, but also in the capital. In this situation, the Albanian population is expected to soon face a shortage of family doctors and emergency doctors, branches that are not preferred by young doctors.

The lack of healthcare professionals is a phenomenon from which all of Europe is suffering.

According to European data, from 2022 onwards, the EU is facing a healthcare workforce shortage of 1.2 million doctors, nurses and midwives, which EU countries are trying to fill with workforce from abroad.

This shortage stems from multiple factors, such as the aging population, which affects both patients and the healthcare workforce itself, combined with difficult working conditions and the difficulties of wearing white shirts, challenges that were further intensified by the Covid-19 pandemic.
