The closure of TikTok in Kosovo is discussed

The Security and Defense Committee discussed the issue of the TikTok social network and the possibility of shutting it down.

The deputy of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Dimal Basha and the one of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Hisen Berisha, have raised this issue before the head of the Agency for Information and Privacy, Krenare Sogojeva-Dermaku, mentioning the dangers of this network. “If the USA feels threatened by this platform, then where is Kosovo’s power and how equipped are we from these floods of these applications that are considered harmful and do we have any awareness campaign for citizens to use these applications”, he stated Berisha, wrote EO.

During the discussion, the head of the AIP stated that with the objectives of the Agency for the year 2025, it is intended to increase the efficiency of the work, in harmony with the allocated budget. She mentioned the objectives regarding the legal obligations for the protection of personal data and access to public documents.

“Advancement of mechanisms for the protection of personal data through inspections and raising the capacities and expertise of the Agency and of public and private institutions, increasing the number of inspections, completing the legal framework for the protection of personal data for law enforcement institutions and fulfilling of the obligations arising from the Convention 108 of the Council of Europe on the automatic processing of personal data, raising the professional capacities of the Agency’s staff in the fields of inspection, control and support of institutions public for increasing the awareness of law enforcement”, she said.

She was also asked about the fines against KESCO and KRU “Prishtina” for sending bills to citizens without envelopes.

“It is true that we have fined KESCO and KRU ‘Prishtina’ for this violation and we no longer have any complaints. Since we have no complaints, it does not mean that we do not inspect these enterprises”, she said. The deputies of the Vetëvendosje Movement did not agree with these topics, and they left the meeting. In June of this year, the Government of Kosovo banned the use and operation of the TikTok application in state institutions.
