Apple aims to manufacture most of its iPhones in India

Tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as tensions between Beijing and Washington, are pushing Apple to step up that effort. Apple is looking to import most of the iPhones it sells in the U.S. from India by the end of next year, accelerating a shift away from China to mitigate risks related to tariffs and geopolitical tensions. The goal would roughly double its annual iPhone production in India to more than 80 million units, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Apple assembled just over 40 million iPhones in India in the fiscal year through March 2025.

Apple is stepping up that effort. The Financial Times previously reported that Apple’s goal was to source all iPhones sold in the U.S. from India by the end of 2026. The vast majority of iPhones made in India are assembled at Foxconn Technology Group’s factory in southern India. Of India’s total production, Apple exported 1.5 trillion rupees ($17.5 billion) worth of iPhones from the Region in the fiscal year to March 2025, the country’s technology minister said on April 8. iPhone shipments from India to the U.S. accelerated after Trump announced his plans for so-called “reciprocal” tariffs in February. Apple’s average production and exports to India rose throughout the fiscal year to March.
