Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday that she and two of her ministers have been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of complicity in genocide in connection with Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
Speaking in an interview on public television RAI, Meloni said that Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto, Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, and “I think” Roberto Cingolani, director of the Leonardo defense group of companies, have been denounced at the court based in The Hague, Reuters news agency reports.
In other comments, Meloni said he believes US President Donald Trump has concluded that Russia is not interested in a peace agreement with Ukraine.
Several Western countries, including Britain, France, and Canada, recognized an independent Palestinian state last month at the UN General Assembly.
In September, Meloni had said that her country was willing to do the same, but with two conditions: that all Israeli hostages be released and that Hamas be excluded from any governing role.
Ms. Meloni leads a right-wing government that has been one of Israel’s strongest allies in the European Union National.
