Elections in Albania, first arrest for vote buying occurs in Lushnje

Just four days after the start of the electoral campaign for the May 11 parliamentary elections, the first case of arrest for active corruption in the electoral process was recorded in Lushnje.

Marin Leka, 38 years old, has been arrested, accused of promising a citizen, Muharrem Toska, the sum of 50 thousand new leks in exchange for votes for the Democratic Party.

However, the official announcement does not specify the number of votes that Toska would secure in favor of this political entity. According to preliminary investigations by the Fier Prosecutor’s Office, during the moment of the arrest of Marin Leka, Muharrem Toska’s identity card was found in his pocket. The latter, after initially agreeing to the agreement, reported the incident to the police only a few hours later.

The police have seized the identity document as material evidence, while investigations to fully uncover this suspected vote-buying scheme continue.
