Poland has begun construction of a 2.29 billion euro “Eastern Shield” along its borders with Russia and Belarus to protect the eastern flank of the NATO alliance as tensions continue in Ukraine. The construction of the shield, more than 640 kilometers long, will include anti-tank fortifications, bunkers and other obstacles built to physically protect the border and control movement. US support for European defense is expected to weaken after Donald Trump takes office as US president in January. We recall that he has repeatedly said that he plans to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the first day of his term and also announced a reduction in aid to Kiev, reports the “Daily Mail”.
Air defense and modern surveillance technologies enabled by artificial intelligence will also protect Poland from the threats of modern warfare. The shield should also include a satellite component to provide ‘another element of security,’ Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
He added that the fortifications were designed to protect the country against potential enemies and the growing threat to the West is considered to be the militarized Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. This is perhaps the largest investment in national security in Poland’s post-war history. A multi-layered defensive line about 200 meters deep is planned, which will consist of fences, ditches and minefields. A high border fence with barbed wire and anti-tank trenches will be the first obstacle to any potential attackers, and other obstacles such as ‘dragon’s teeth’, concrete blocks will be placed along the way.
