Ambassadors of the 27 EU member states have unanimously decided that Albania will open the sixth chapter of the negotiations, that on external relations. This decision marks another step for our country on the path towards full membership in the EU. According to the official announcement of the Hungarian presidency of the EU, the European Council will start working on a common position with our country for the preparation of the next Intergovernmental Conference in December.
The sixth chapter on foreign policy is expected to be closed first, as Albania’s foreign policy is fully in line with the European Union.
The EU officially launched accession negotiations with Tirana on October 15 by opening chapter I, that on fundamental principles, which according to the revised methodology is also the last to be closed. The EC has supported the Albanian government’s ambition to open the entire group of accession negotiation chapters by 2025 and to conclude their review by 2027. Diplomatic sources explain that Albania could be part of the EU by 2028 if the required reforms are implemented on time.
