Quo Vadis Albania, Between democracy and authoritarianism

On Tuesday 08/04/2025, we had the honor of co-organizing the event “Quo Vadis Albania? Between Democracy and Authoritarianism.” Moderated by Mr. Juxhin Gjoni, Executive Director of the Eugenius Foundation, the event featured distinguished speakers including MEP Mr. Arkadiusz Mularczyk (ECR), former Vice President of the European Parliament Mr. Ryszard Czarnecki (ECR), Dr. Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party of Albania (joining online), and Mr. Fredi Beleris, MEP (EPP).

The discussion offered valuable insights into the current political landscape in Albania and the challenges that may arise in the lead-up to the upcoming elections. Moreover, with the participation of more than 30 MEPs, the event was a resounding success, fostering constructive dialogue on key democratic issues. Mr. Arkadius Mularczyk and Mr. Ryszard Czarnecki, at their speech, emphasized the presence of European Institutions to secure free and democratic elections in Albania.

During this activity, the participants briefed the European Parliament on reported irregularities during the 14 May 2023 elections, including concerns about the involvement of criminal elements and potential influences. There is a shared belief that Albania, by virtue of its cultural heritage and geographical position, is inherently aligned with Europe. However, current governmental policies have raised concerns that merit attention and discussion.

The event marked a successful step toward informing both European and American political institutions about the developments in Albania. Most importantly, it underscored the need for continued collaboration to support Albania’s progress toward becoming a well-governed, fully prepared candidate for European Union membership.
