The European Union and Chinese officials are continuing talks on alternatives to European tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, including minimum prices at which such vehicles can be sold in Europe.
However, no solution is close, European officials said on Monday, Reuters reported. Bernd Lange, chairman of the European Parliament’s trade committee, said on Friday that a deal between China and the 27 EU countries to replace the tariffs with something else was close. But EU officials, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the talks with Beijing, said that was not correct because while talks are continuing, there are still obstacles to reaching a deal.
To address the subsidies, the European Union last month raised tariffs on electric vehicles made in China by up to 45.3 percent, a move that has divided Europe and prompted retaliation from Beijing. The China EU Chamber of Commerce said at the time that it was disappointed by the EU’s “arbitrary” measures.
